Grown in China for over 2000 years, the apricot was introduced to the Near East via Iran and Armenia before reaching Turkey, the main exporter in 2021.
Dried apricot is the fruit favoured by athletes. Indeed, it offers a quickly available source of energy as well as minerals (including a good quantity of potassium, useful in case of cramp) and fibre. It therefore provides the nutrients necessary for the muscles during exercise.
Like carrots, apricots are particularly rich in beta-carotene. That is what gives them that lovely orange colour. Eat them regularly and enjoy a radiant complexion!
The apricot is also the friend of your intestines as it is rich in pectin, a soluble fibre that relieves constipation and regulates intestinal transit. Dried apricots are therefore recommended in cases of irritable bowel, for example.
The soluble fibre contained in apricots also has the ability to absorb water. They thus provide you with a feeling of satiety and prevent you from gaining weight.
Dried apricot is generally recommended by gynaecologists during pregnancy. It indeed contains several essential nutrients contributing to the growth and development of the foetus. Moreover, they contain a significant amount of iron, thus preventing pregnancy anaemia which increases the risk of premature birth.
Stress, pollution and sunlight are all factors in the production of free radicals and therefore in the ageing of cells. These free radicals cause modifications to the DNA of cells and can therefore lead to the formation of cancerous cells. To protect against them, doctors recommend consuming foods rich in antioxidants. And that is the case with apricots!
You may not know it: the orange colour of dried apricots is not natural. Orange apricots have been treated before drying with sulphur vapour (SULPHITES) to improve their colour, extend their shelf life and prevent bacterial growth. Organic apricots, on the other hand, have undergone no chemical treatment, hence their brown colour.
Contrary to popular belief, sulphites are not a health hazard. They are only an allergen that can cause headaches, asthma and possibly an anaphylactic reaction in people who are allergic or sensitive to sulphites.
